Ask The Unicorn is an amazing album that redefined the concept of “incredibly strange music” when it was released on ESP in 1969. Odd, even for one of the least commercially oriented labels of the period, Ed Askew based his musical research on applying a peculiar and bizarre Columbian instrument, the tiple, to his folk-psych melodies. An instrument similar to the lute and very hard to play because of its unique string setup, the tiple offers an amazing background to the eccentric singing found here in the grooves of his first album (a second album, Little Eyes, was scheduled for release in 1970 but never saw the light of day due to financial difficulties at the label). A total must for the Holy Modal Rounders and Jan Dukes de Gray appreciation society…
