SAM CHATMON – Blues When It Rains

LP 180 gram (burgundy jacket)

UPC: 8013252559327 (LP)

Sam Chatmon was born on 10 January 1897 in Bolton, Mississippi. He came from a family of musicians; his father played the fiddle in the square dance style and his mother played the guitar. Growing up in such a musical household (Charley Patton was also his half-brother), he soon formed a band called the Mississippi Sheiks with brothers Bo, Lonnie, Harry and Edgard, joined off and on by Walter Vinson. During the 1930s the group recorded numerous records for the race market , and became very popular all over the south. After dropping from public view for many years, Chatmon was “rediscovered” in 1960 in Hollandale, MS by Paul Oliver and Chris Strachwitz. During this period he made recordings with John Fahey and Nick Perls for Blue Goose Records and appeared at numerous folk festivals, particularly in California. He spent the rest of his life in Hollandale, where the recordings collected on this album were made. He died on 2 February 1983.
