LONNIE DONEGAN “Showcase”
Format: 180 gram LP
Barcode: 8013552886119
Although for many his name has long since faded into obscurity, there was a time, during the mid-fifties, when in Britain Lonnie Donegan was, to quote Paul McCartney, was “the man”. He had just invented a new style of music, skiffle, and every teenager in Britain was racing out to the record shops to snap up anything the man recorded, including his debut LP
Showcase, originally released on Pye in 1956, which featured acoustic folk-blues standards like “Frankie & Johnny”, and “I m A Ramblin Man”. In 1956, he was not only England s premier bluesman, but he was perhaps most importantly also one of the first rock & roll stars in the mode of Elvis Presley (before Elvis was King) and is credited with priming the pumps for the musical deluge that was soon to come.
“He was the first person we had heard of from Britain to get to the coveted No. 1 in the charts, and we studied his records avidly. We all bought guitars to be in a skiffle group. He was the man." —
Paul McCartney
